Tooth pain occurs when the dental pulp (internal structure of the tooth that contains nerve endings and blood vessels) becomes inflamed.
This happens in cases of:
- gingival recession
The gums are the layer of tissue that surrounds the tooth root and protects the nerve endings, as the gum tissue ages it starts to wear out, leaving the roots of the teeth more exposed and causing pain;
- tooth sensitivity
If you feel pain in your teeth during or shortly after eating something cold or hot, you may have problems with tooth sensitivity. It is a fairly common condition, which arises when the dentin of the tooth is exposed by enamel wear or gingival retractions;
- misaligned teeth
Misaligned teeth have a tendency to press on neighboring teeth, which can result in some discomfort and pain. A common example are the teeth of the siso that cannot erupt from the gum, putting pressure on the adjacent teeth and occasionally deteriorating below the level of the gum.
- Bruxism
The habit of excessive grinding of teeth involves strong jaw clenches and intense friction between upper and lower teeth, resulting in pain in the teeth, jaws, neck and head.
- Damaged dental restorations
Treatments for dental cavities, such as restorations that protect the most vulnerable parts of the tooth, if they are damaged, do not fulfill their function, and the sensitive parts of the teeth become more exposed to extreme temperatures, food particles, and bacteria;
- Tooth fractures
Teeth can be cracked or chipped in various ways, during a fall, while playing sports or biting something hard…. If you feel pain in a fractured tooth, it means that the fracture has affected the dental pulp where the nerve endings are and can result in severe pain;
- tooth abscess
It is a condition where an accumulation of pus (an abscess) forms inside the tooth, gum or jaw. It is a common situation that occurs in people of any age, originating from a bacterial infection. Symptoms include severe pain in the mouth and jaw, swelling of the gums or face, and sometimes fever;
- Dental caries
It is the most common cause of toothache in the world. It is caused by the action of certain bacteria that can cause partial or total destruction of the tooth.
