What is endodontics?
Commonly known as a canal treatment (which connects the tip of the root to the dental pulp), endodontics is the area of dental medicine responsible for the study and treatment of the dental pulp, also known as “nerve” and the tissues that support the tooth, with the ultimate goal of preserving and maintaining the natural tooth. In addition to treating deep cavities, endodontics also corrects dental fractures and trauma, among other types of injury.
What is the treatment?
Commonly known as “devitalization”, endodontic treatment has the purpose of removing the nerve from the tooth or retreating the tooth, treating the pain of the teeth, through modern techniques and cutting-edge technology.
When the dental pulp becomes inflamed or infected, it is removed and the inside part of the tooth is carefully cleaned and disinfected, then filled with biocompatible material, which will seal the dental canal, in order to prevent its reinfection and thus save the natural tooth.
After finishing the treatment and depending on the degree of destruction of it, its rehabilitation is done with a restoration, or if the destruction is greater, the tooth must be rehabilitated with a structure made in the laboratory – onlays, inlays or crowns.
It can happen, in the first days after treatment (1 to 3 days), the tooth may appear slightly more sensitive, especially if there has been pain, abscess or cyst before the consultation.

Special cases
Endodontics in pregnancy
Devitalization is not contraindicated during pregnancy. The use of drugs, anesthesia and the use of X-rays necessary to view the inside of the tooth makes the ideal period for carrying out this treatment is the second trimester.
However, if it is not possible to postpone the treatment, you can safely carry out it following the instructions of our medical team.
Endodontics in pediatric dentistry
Devitalization of milk teeth is also possible and advised to the detriment of early extraction, which can result in problems with occlusion (bite). This process becomes necessary when the caries becomes very extensive and deep and affects the nerve or dental trauma, it is mandatory to clean the contaminated area and repair the tooth pulp. These cases can lead to infections, impairing the development of permanent teeth.
Frequently asked questions
Although there is such an idea, this is nothing more than a myth. The devitalized teeth “are no longer attached” to the tissues of our body, however, their fragility is related to the restoration that is done after endodontic treatment.
It can. Due to various reasons, the tooth may turn a yellow, pink or even black color. Fortunately, through internal whitening of the tooth structure, it can return to its original color.
