Child tooth rash: what is normal during the birth of the first teeth?
The phase of a child’s dental eruption is one that generates the most doubts in the first years of a child’s life.
There are babies that go through this stage almost without discomfort. Others become more restless, sleep worse, constantly try to bite objects or spend more irritable days without parents being able to realize exactly what is happening.
And it is precisely this uncertainty that often generates anxiety. Is it normal? Is it related to the teeth? Or could there be another problem?

Although teeth are not yet visible in the first months of life, milk teeth have been developing inside the jaws since birth.
In most babies, the first teeth start to appear around age 6 months, although small variations are perfectly normal.
Usually, the first teeth to erupt are located on the front of the mouth, especially in the lower arch.
Over the first few years, the remaining teeth gradually emerge until they complete the 20 deciduous teeth known as milk teeth.
But not all children follow exactly the same rhythm.
And, for the most part, this does not mean that there is any problem.
What are the most common symptoms of a tooth rash?
Many parents automatically associate any change in behavior with the birth of their teeth. However, each baby reacts very differently during this phase.
Some show almost no discomfort. Others become more sensitive for a few days.
The most frequent signs include:
- More sensitive gums
- Increased salivation
- Constant need to bite objects
- Irritability
- Slight changes in sleep
- Gingival discomfort
It is also very common for babies to try to relieve pressure on their gums and bite toys, hands or other everyday objects.
Still, the most intense symptoms should not always be attributed to the tooth rash alone. When there are doubts or persistent changes, the clinical evaluation by our pediatric dentist, Dr. Joana Nogueira, is an important help and helps to detect other problems.
As the Order of Dentists (OMD) warns, baby smile care begins long before the eruption of the first teeth.
How to relieve the discomfort of the baby?
In most cases, simple measures help to temporarily relieve gingival sensitivity.
Gently wiping a clean finger or wet gauze over the gum can provide some relief for the baby.
Teething rings can also be useful during this phase, especially when used correctly and under supervision.
More important than eliminating discomfort completely is to ensure peace of mind, comfort and proper support as the child goes through this natural stage of growth.
In a child’s tooth rash, are all teeth born in the same order?
There is a sequence considered usual for tooth rash, but small differences between children are relatively common.
Usually:
- the lower incisors appear first
- following are the upper incisors
- subsequently appear molars and canines
Over the course of growth, milk teeth are gradually replaced by permanent teeth.
In most children, this process happens naturally and in a balanced way.
However, when there are very pronounced delays, lack of dental space or major changes following eruption, a dental assessment may be recommended.
Why are milk teeth so important?
There is also the idea that milk teeth “end up falling out” and therefore do not need much attention.
But the reality is rather different.
In addition to being fundamental for chewing, speaking and oral development, deciduous teeth also help maintain adequate space for the definitive teeth.
When a milk tooth is lost too soon, neighboring teeth may move progressively and take up the space that should be available for the permanent tooth.
Over time, this can make it difficult for the proper eruption of the permanent teeth and contribute to future misalignments.
This is precisely why preventive care during childhood remains so important.
When should the first dental appointment take place?
Many parents only seek a consultation when pain, tooth decay or some more obvious problem appears.
However, the first dental assessment should take place much earlier.
Ideally, the child should be observed after the birth of the first milk tooth or until he completes the first year of life, as we have seen here, leaving some advice for this moment.
Healthy growth of child dentition starts early
The tooth rash represents a natural stage of childhood growth. Still, monitoring this phase preemptively allows early identification of changes that may influence oral development over the years.
In A Clínica Dr. Pedro Mota, each child is accompanied individually, respecting their growth rate, dental development and specific needs at each stage of childhood.
