What is periodontology?
Periodontology is the specialty of dental medicine that is dedicated to the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases affecting the tissues that support the teeth: gums, bone and ligament between the tooth and bone.
Periodontal diseases are caused by the accumulation of plaque (biofilm) and tartar (calcified plaque) in the oral cavity, leading to inflammation of the periodontal tissues.
Periodontal disease manifests itself at an early stage, usually by gingivitis, a generalized inflammation of the gum, which, properly diagnosed and treated, is reversible. When this does not happen, gingivitis evolves to a more severe stage called periodontitis, which affects, in addition to the gum, the tooth support bone itself, which if not treated in time can lead to loss of teeth due to lack of bone support.
What causes inflammation of the gums?
Poor oral hygiene (which causes tartar buildup) smoking habits, uncontrolled diabetes and genetic factors can contribute to the onset and development of gum disease.

What treatments does periodontology offer?
Early treatment of periodontitis involves the removal of plaque and tartar (destartisation) adhering to the surface of teeth, above and below the gum line and instructions for care in your oral hygiene at home. In more advanced cases, with bone loss, there may be a need for corrective periodontal surgery. When we have the disease under control, we can start the maintenance phase so that the disease does not worsen.

Every hour three Portuguese have a stroke, which makes this cardiac pathology one of the most common among our population. You probably already knew this, but what you may not know is the influence that poor oral health has on heart disease. The oral disease most associated with cardiac pathology is periodontitis and the bacteria that cause it and are in the oral cavity enter and circulate into the bloodstream, reside in areas of the heart and cause inflammation. In addition to stroke, other heart conditions can develop such as bacterial endocarditis – an infection of the inner lining of the heart and atherosclerosis – clogged arteries. If you are diabetic
Did you know that people with diabetes are twice as likely to develop periodontitis? Without treatment, this gum disease becomes more severe, which undermines diabetes control. If you are diabetic, to avoid dental problems, control your blood sugar, maintain good oral hygiene, and have regular appointments every 6 months.
